After the Supreme Court overturnedRoe v. Wade (410 US 113, 1973)on Friday, June 24th, 2022,Yesli Vega, a candidate for Virginia’s 7th Congressional district, viewed the historic ruling as an opportunity to promote her conservative Christian beliefs aggressively.
Mrs. Vega, who was challenging incumbent VirginiaDemocratic Representative Abigail Spanbergerduring the 2022 midterm elections, shared her views regarding what women and girls should do in cases of rape or incest. “I’m a law enforcement officer. I became a police officer in 2011. I’ve worked one case where as a result of a rape, the young woman became pregnant,” Mrs. Vega said.
“Because it’s [rape], not something that’s happening organically. You’re forcing it. The individual, the male, is doing it as quickly…”Vega continued.
Mrs. Vega eventually lost to Representative Spanberger because of those comments and other extreme pro-MAGA views she expressed during the campaign. However, former President Donald Trump enthusiastically endorsedYesli Vega and a bunch of other conservative Christians and far-right-wing Catholics in 2022.

One of the “bellwether” endorsem*nts that Donald Trump doled out to conservative Christians during the 2022 midterm elections was his aggressive support of Doug Mastriano for Governor against formerAttorney General Josh Shapiro.
Doug Mastriano, a current member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, is a prominent 2020 election denier who actively engaged in Mr. Trump’s national attempts to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Trump and the GOP focused on Pennsylvania as the most critical state they needed to overturn the 2020 Presidential election successfully.
Mastriano attended Trump’s Capitol Hill protest of the Congressional certification of Biden’s victory on January 6th, 2021. In addition, he is on video breaching Capitol Police barriers.
Yet, it is Senator Mastriano’s connections to far-right-wing Christian nationalists and antisemitic racists that should be most concerning to American voters as we close in on the 2024 US presidential election between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. A large segment of Doug Mastriano’s support comes from reactionary militia organizations likeThe Three Percenters, The Oath Keepers,andLifeGate.

There is a reason politically right-wing politicians, businessmen, and media celebrities like Doug Mastriano, Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro, and Megyn Kelly so gleefully focus on “culture war” issues rather than putting forth substantive policy solutions to the challenges Americans face during this 2024 presidential election cycle.
They seek to obscure the fact that religious organizations like The LifeGate Evangelical Churchofficially support electing Evangelical Christians to public office to advance biblical principles in government. Members from all three anti-government groups affiliated with Senator Mastriano served on his private security detail during the 2022 midterm elections. These groups are now gearing up to help Trump regain the White House on November 5th.

In 2022, Andrew Torba said about Doug Mastriano’s gubernatorial campaign, “This is the most important election of the 2022 midterms because Doug is an outspoken Christian.”
“We are going to build a coalition of Christian nationalists, of Christians, of Christian candidates, at the state, local, and federal levels, and we’re going to take this country back for the glory of God,” continued Torba. Senator Mastriano and his supporters are the “ground soldiers” or “stormtroopers” of Donald Trump’s MAGA movement.
The Heritage Foundation serves as the intelligence officer cadre, and Project 2025 is the battle plan for the evangelical Christian takeover of the American federal government.
