First Virtual Psychiatry Unit in British ColumbiaFraser Health, a leading healthcare provider in British Columbia, is launching of its first virtual psychiatry unit. It began as a pilot project in September 2022 am]and has now evolved into a full-fledged unit that has already served 140 patients. This innovative approach allows patients to receive high-quality psychiatric care from the comfort of their own homes.Radhika Khosla, who has been involved in the project since its developmental stages, emphasizes the significance of this achievement. As the unit's manager, she highlights that although patients receive treatment at home, this is a hospital-admitted unit, offering care equivalent to that of a traditional hospital.The virtual psychiatry unit aims to match patients with the right environment for their mental health to thrive. Research indicates that patients often recover better in familiar surroundings, and prolonged hospital stays can have a detrimental effect on their condition and independence.Patients admitted to the unit receive the necessary equipment, including an LTE-enabled iPad for connectivity and vital monitoring devices such as blood-pressure cuffs. The technology is user-friendly, ensuring that patients can easily access the care they need.One former patient, Julie (name changed for privacy), expressed how the Virtual Psychiatry Unit transformed her mental health journey. She received timely support from her care team and was able to maintain her daily routines while undergoing treatment, a privilege she might not have had in a traditional hospital setting.The unit's flexibility has even allowed new mothers struggling with post-partum depression to receive care while staying close to their newborns, enabling breastfeeding and maternal bonding during therapy sessions.Fraser Health's virtual psychiatry unit is a testament to the power of innovation and patient-centric care, making mental health treatment more accessible, dignified, and effective for those in need. Clinical pharmacists provide medication reconciliation in ALL Slovenian hospitals at admission and discharge, provide personal medication cards and dispense medications for homestay (seamless care)✅. As a topic editor of the Frontiers in Psychiatry, together with my colleague, we have published a case report paper in the Frontiers in Psychiatry (impact factor 4.6), which shows how important this service is in a psychiatric hospital ✅ . Clinical pharmacists can only take this service. Clinical pharmacists reduced the number of medication-related problems, optimized outcomes (recognized untreated conditions), and helped psychiatrists a lot. We closed this issue with this clinically relevant topic. This service is reimbursed extra in Slovenia for each case from 2023 and is most developed in Slovenia in all this part of Europe✅.
